What is Physiatry?
Physiatry is the practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation (a.k.a PM&R). The goal of a Physiatrist is to restore function to an individual, from stroke patients learning how to walk and care for themselves again to high level athletes dealing with an injury or muscle imbalance that is preventing them from competing at the highest level.
A Physiatrist is an MD who has completed medical school, a medical internship of 3 years or speciality residency training in PM&R. Sports Medicine, pain management, stroke, spinal cord and amputee care as well as pediatric disability management falls under the scope of practice of a Physiatrist. A Physiatrist is taught to treat the whole person, not just the injured part.
The best treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis. After a thorough neuromusculoskeletal exam, your Physiatrist may order additional tests such as x-ray, CT or MRI scans, or possibly blood tests. She may perform an EMG/Nerve conduction study, or a joint aspiration to further assist in confirming a diagnosis. After a diagnosis is established, a treatment plan is developed. This may involve medication, trigger point, joint, or epidural injections, PrP injections (platelet rich plasma), nutritional advice and/or referral for manual therapy such as physiotherapy.
Your Physiatrist will ensure that you are given the tools necessary to remain in good health after your treatment has finished. These tools include injury/disease process education, a home exercise program, medication, nutritional support and follow-up care.
